Here are rough figures by vehicle type, just to place yourself.

- Three-quarter-ton pickup or larger4,500 to 9,000 kg
These are ranges, not ratings. Your vehicle's real capacity depends on its engine, axle ratio and whether it has a tow package, and some vehicles are rated at 0 kg by their manufacturer. Always confirm in the manual before booking.
Read this before booking
This tool compares numbers; it does not know your vehicle. The manufacturer's towing capacity assumes an adequate hitch and a vehicle in good condition, and it covers the loaded combination, not the empty trailer. The weight of passengers and luggage counts too. When in doubt, talk to your dealer.
Trailer brakes are required from 1,300 kg loaded, or as soon as the trailer exceeds half the curb weight of the vehicle towing it. The two criteria are alternatives: meeting either one is enough. Read the article on the Quebec rules.
